Chairman's Report: From the $45 Billion Summer Olympics to Expanded Specialty Scientific Training, Nations Around the World Address the Challenges of Global Aging

A4M

Summer 2008 Olympic Games

China's commitment to advancement offers great promise for the future. Subscribing to the ideals of a xiaokang (well-off in an all-round way) and harmonious society, the Government's "people's agenda" strives to achieve a significant improvement in the lives of the entire Chinese population by 2020. ["China: Country Context," World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific, http://www.wpro.who.int/countries/chn/CHN.htm; "China: Health Situation and Trend," World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific, http://www.wpro.who.int/countries/chn/health_situation.htm.].

It is in this vein that China has welcomingly embraced the anti-aging medical model. Dr. Robert Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., D.O., FAASP, Chairman of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M;www.worldhealth.net) and The World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine (WAAAM; www.waaam.net), was a distinguished guest at the Summer 2008 Olympic Games, a venue that provided the opportunity to visit with governmental officials to advance the availability and accessibility of anti-aging clinical care to the Chinese population.

The Asia-Pacific region represents the fastest-growing market for anti-aging products. ["Anti-Aging Products - Executive Summary" p. II-1, in "Anti-Aging Products: A Global Strategic Business Report: MCP-1107," Global Industry Analysts, Inc., San Jose, CA. March 2008.]. The anti-aging marketplace in the Asia-Pacific is estimated at $8.51 Billion in 2008. Growing at a compounded annual rate of 9.14% (2001 to 2010), the Asia-Pacific anti-aging marketplace is projected to reach $10.22 Billion by 2010. A4M's partner in china is the largest distributor of CT, PET/CT and MRI of GE (General Electric Corp), and manages over 100 image centers and cancer treatment centers in AAA hospitals throughout China. The Joint Ventures between these Chinese anti-aging companies and the A4M is poised to position the participating entities as leaders in anti-aging medicine, rejuvenation medicine and biomedicine by establishing 3 platforms in China and Asia. On the academic level, future partnerships enable positive relations with the China Academy of Medicine, Military Academy of Medicine, Chinese University medical schools, and the China CDC. The joint R&D projects will play an important role in a national project to establish new standards of adult aging bio-markers on the basis of anti-aging diagnostics and clinical treatment.

On a visit to China, Dr. Goldman met with the heads of the China Medical Association and China Academy of Medicine, with the objectives of exploring co-ventures in global medical education and research projects.

The goal of anti-aging medicine is not to merely prolong the total years of an individual's life, but to ensure that those years are enjoyed in a productive and vital fashion. Explains Dr. Goldman: "When I co-founded the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M; www.worldhealth.net) with Dr. Ronald Klatz in 1992, we established the field of anti-aging medicine as a direct extension of sports medicine. Just as sports medicine aims to keep the athlete's body functioning at its optimum level, anti-aging medicine seeks to keep the body functioning at its peak. In other words, the similar principle, of extending and maximizing the healthy human lifespan, is at the core of both anti-aging medicine and sports medicine."

Indonesia

The 7th Asia Pacific Conference on Anti-Aging Medicine and Regenerative Biotechnology took place 10 - 12 October 2008 at the Grand Hyatt Resort Bali. This program aimed to provide an insight of recent medical breakthrough and technology development to extend healthy lifespan.

The program was well attended by delegates representing 19 countries from all continents in the world, including: Australia, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hongkong, India, USA, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, and Taiwan; with Indonesia as the host country.

During Opening Remarks, Dr. Robert Goldman explained that:  “In almost every country, the proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group, as a result of both longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates. This population ageing can be seen as a success story for public health policies and for socioeconomic development, but it also challenges society to adapt, in order to maximize the health and functional capacity of older people as well as their social participation and security.”

Concluding Remarks

Asia and the Middle East are two geographic regions that are comprised of nations that are now home to some of the world's most rapidly aging populations. As such, governments in many of these nations are looking to the anti-aging medical model in an effort to avert the imminent economic, social, personal, and political ramifications associated with swelling numbers of aging citizens. The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M; www.worldhealth.net), and The World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine (WAAAM; www.waaam.net), proudly co-sponsor or co-support anti-aging conferences taking place in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, India, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. Visit The World Health Network, www.worldhealth.net, for information about upcoming global scientific conferences in anti-aging medicine that promote educational exchange and dialogue in an effort to encourage the expanded training of physicians in this clinical medical specialty.
